Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, about 400 km (approximately 5-6 hours) from the capital, Kampala. It sits between Lake George and Lake Edward and is bordered by the famous Kazinga Channel.
The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Big Four (elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes), as well as hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, Uganda kobs, and over 600 species of birds. The park is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, often found in the Ishasha sector.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities including game drives, boat cruises along the Kazinga Channel, chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge, bird watching, nature walks, and visits to the salt lakes and fishing villages. The park also offers hot air balloon safaris and cultural tours.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, when wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water sources. However, the park is open year-round, and bird watching is especially good during the wet season, when migratory birds are present.
Yes, there are a wide range of accommodations available, from luxury lodges to budget-friendly options. Lodges such as Mweya Safari Lodge, Kyambura Gorge Lodge, and Ishasha Wilderness Camp offer comfortable stays with beautiful views of the park. Camping options are also available for those seeking a more adventurous experience.
A typical stay ranges from 2 to 3 days, which allows time for game drives, a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, chimpanzee trekking, and exploring the park’s rich biodiversity. However, longer stays can offer a more relaxed experience and the chance to discover more hidden gems within the park.
Yes, the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its population of tree-climbing lions. These lions can often be spotted lounging in the branches of fig and acacia trees, a unique behavior seen in few other places in the world.
It’s recommended to pack light, breathable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, and sturdy shoes for game drives or nature walks. A light jacket or sweater is also useful for cooler early mornings and evenings.
